StarCraft 2 is the successor to Blizzard Entertainment’s wildly successful 1998 game StarCraft, widely regarded as one of the best real-time strategy games of all time. The game revolutionized the genre, securing for itself a place in the hearts of all who play it. Three races, perfectly balanced and faithfully designed, set the stage for millions of multiplayer games, seemingly infinite strategies, and epic campaigns. The compelling storyline, in-universe feel, and extraordinary gameplay have kept StarCraft in the gaming industry’s eye for almost a decade. With Blizzard’s announcement of StarCraft 2, the world is on fire once again.
Thousands of light-years away from the Earth we know, in a remote sector of space, there are incredible forces, entire civilizations unimaginable to the human mind. Some of them are pure evil, some fight only for survival, and some vie for control and order. However, in the Koprulu Sector, lawlessness is the rule.
The Terrans, descendants of outcasts and mutants from Earth, are constantly in war. The totalitarian Confederacy regime has been overthrown in a complex civil confrontation. The Dominion, the new authority, is attempting to bring together the struggling Terran factions; but there are some still who resist the oppressive new rule.
The Protoss are a race of highly intelligent humanoids. Bound together by their astounding technological prowess and psionic abilities, the Protoss have been forced off of their homeworld Aiur. Their rigid society being challenged, the Protoss now have allied with their shamed and outcast brothers, the Dark Templar. The Protoss are rebuilding, and already rumors are spreading. They are poised to take back their home world.
The Zerg are a single-minded, highly evolved race of insect-like creatures. They are coherent, formerly ruled by their Overmind, and highly adaptable – they are able to integrate others into their own genetic strands and quickly reproduce new numbers. The Zerg brought all the races of the Koprulu Sector to their knees, led by the once-Terran Queen of Blades. However, the Zerg have retreated into silence for the past years, quiet and planning. All the races now diligently watch and wait for the return of the Swarm.
So, what’s new? Improved graphics capture and bring the player into the StarCraft universe. The already tight and hard-hitting multiplayer from StarCraft is being further enhanced with new units and abilities, coupled with greatly enhanced Battle.net functionality and a matchmaking mechanic designed to bring equally skilled players together in battle for the ultimate multiplayer experience. The amazing story will be continued through campaigns; heroes new and old will be continuing the single player experience from where the original StarCraft left off, as Zeratul, Kerrigan, Raynor and many others do battle on worlds seen and unseen. Other enhancements allow the player to feel as if she is right in the action, with selectable dialog and other options.
Will Arcturus Mengsk rebuild the Terran Dominion with rival human factions sniping at his heels? Will the Protoss and the newly re-united Dark Templar be able to rebuild their shattered society? And what of Kerrigan, the Queen of Blades? It has been four long years since the dark queen of the Zerg swarms has been seen or heard of… and only a fool would assume that she’s gone off into retirement.
