About StarCraft 2
What is StarCraft 2?
StarCraft 2 is a new, upcoming real-time strategy game designed by
Blizzard Entertainment. It continues the highly popular and acclaimed game,
StarCraft, and will build up even more Blizzard’s highly-deserved game making reputation. It was first announced on May 19th, 2007.
Where is it set?
StarCraft 2 occurs four years after the original StarCraft, in a region of space light-years away from Earth. In the Koprulu Sector, the
Terrans, descendants from Earth, have established a presence. Corruption and power-hungriness run thick in the various civil wars, but there are more problems. The
Protoss, highly technological aliens, and the
Zerg, the frightening insectoid race, are constantly invading and warring. It is an unstable, dystopic future.
What is StarCraft, period?
StarCraft (also called “StarCraft 1” for clarity) is the first game in the StarCraft series. It was released in 1998 by Blizzard Entertainment, and it took the world by storm. It spawned a huge book franchise, and has been popularly received by thousands of avid players all over the world. In fact, in South Korea, it is played as a professional sport!
How is StarCraft 2 played?
StarCraft 2 is a real-time strategy game. Instead of becoming directly involved as a soldier, you collect resources, build bases and train troops. You then order your forces in real time to victory, confronting the enemy in the same way. It is an extremely fun experience, especially in multi-player, where you can play with your friends!
When will it be released?
At this moment, there is no set release date. All that has been confirmed is that the game will not be released in the 2007 season.
For what platforms will StarCraft 2 be released?
The game is currently being developed for a simultaneous release for Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Mac
OS X. It is not planned to be released on any consoles.
What’s New
What is different about the general gameplay?
There will not be a huge departure from StarCraft 1’s gameplay. You will still harvest resources like minerals and vespene gas. Units will still be produced from buildings, and there will still be a high level of strategy needed. However, the game will showcase many new features, such as an improved Battle.net and highly improved graphics.
What new units and buildings are there
StarCraft 2 will feature a wealth of new units and buildings. Some units will be improved from StarCraft 1, while others will be completely original. Please see our
units page for a comprehensive listing of announced units.
What are some primary features
The campaign, which will build on the highly involved and praised storyline from StarCraft 1 and will feature realistically rendered cut scenes, is certainly a primary aspect. Aside from this, there will be major improvements to the multiplayer Battle.net system; perks such as matchmaking will help you find players of your skill level. There is also a campaign editor – anyone who has played StarCraft 1 will certainly appreciate this.
Where can we expect the storyline to lead us?
There are many, many elements that have trickled into StarCraft 2. After its destruction in StarCraft: Brood War, the Terran Dominion is rebuilding. The Zerg, who dominated the galaxy, have retreated under the orders of their mysterious “queen.” The Protoss have been forced from their world of Aiur, now dwelling on the Dark Templar stronghold Shakuras. The sector is in an uneasy peace, waiting for the Zerg ultimate attack. The question is: why has it not yet come?
What characters have been confirmed?
There will be several characters featured in StarCraft 1. Jim Raynor, Arcturus Mengsk, Zeratul, and Kerrigan will return to play their parts. However, after the events of Brood War, it has been four long years; some of them have become jaded, desensitized, or guilty. Some have become even more fanatical.
What new characters will be in the campaign?
The campaign will feature newcomers to the series such as Tychus Findlay and Matt Horner, who are members of Raynor’s crew. Additionally, it appears there will be tie-ins from the novels; Valerian Mengsk, the heir apparent of the Dominion, will play a significant role.
